Georgia DOT Leadership Award
Karen Mathews - WellStar Health Systems
Karen Mathews, Director of WorkLife Services for WellStar Health System, has been instrumental in implementing WellStar’s FlexWorks initiative.
Karen Mathews has been with WellStar Human Resources since 2004. She understands the unique challenges and opportunities that flexible work arrangements present on the clinical side and the administrative side of the healthcare business. We often hear the Georgia Commute Options Alternate Work Arrangements Consulting team refer to the programs as a workplace strategy, rather than a benefit, and WellStar follows that same mantra.
Recognizing the effect of flexible work schedules on reducing traffic and improving our region’s air quality, Mathews spearheaded the movement towards flexible options for employees back in 2011. While many departments were already using flexible work strategies at WellStar, there was no formal construct or program support.
WellStar’s new centralized scheduling and web-based self-scheduling tool, “Daily Flex,” provides flexibility for clinical staff to select shifts, swap shifts and request time off weeks in advance. This has benefited both team members and managers by automating the task of organizing scheduling and alternative work arrangements. Daily Flex has been widely adopted to allow team members to adjust their schedules as needed to meet the demands of family and work loads. Over 80% of surveyed employees indicated they use Daily Flex.
Congratulations to Karen Mathews for winning the Georgia DOT Leadership Award presented at the Georgia Commute Honors ceremony!
