Rising Star: Employer
PulteGroup is one of the nation’s largest homebuilders, employing approximately 3,400 individuals across 28 states. In mid-2014, the company began relocating its corporate offices and approximately 300 staff to the Capital City Plaza building in Buckhead. The proximity of Capital City Plaza to the Buckhead MARTA Station was a major factor in the company’s decision to move there.
“I frankly think we have the best location in Buckhead,” said Richard Dugas Jr., the Chairman, President and CEO of PulteGroup. “It would not shock me if 50 percent of our workforce ends up taking MARTA to work every day.”
And with PulteGrooup’s support of transit for employees, the workforce is well on their way to meeting Mr. Dugas’ projection. As the first employees arrived in June 2014, the company began participating in the Livable Buckhead discounted transit pass program. The majority of PulteGroup’s employees fall squarely into the “choice rider” group; a group that is essential to a meaningful shift in how transit and specifically MARTA is perceived and to its future growth.
In addition to encouraging transit ridership by its employees, PulteGroup demonstrated its support of transit in Atlanta when it partnered with the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce to host an event in the fall of 2014 to promote MARTA’s GoClayton campaign. MARTA’s CEO and General Manager Keith Parker and Mayor Kasim Reed both attended and spoke about how critical the Clayton vote would be to set a precedent for MARTA’s future expansion into metro Atlanta counties.
On top of offering pre-tax deductions for transit passes, PulteGroup has worked with Livable Buckhead to develop and implement a robust marketing and communications campaign via internal e-blasts and fliers posted around the worksite. A commuter dot map showing where employees were commuting from was created for display in break rooms along with targeted marketing to promote internal ridematching.
Through a combination of high level corporate buy in, a decision to locate near transit and redefined corporate culture, 8.5% of commutes to the PulteGroup Home Office now involve an alternative mode. But as PulteGroup’s CEO has pointed out, this is just the beginning.
Congratulations to PulteGroup for winning the Georgia Commute Honors award for Rising Star: Employer!
