We are partnering with the Path Foundation to show Metro Atlantans just how far you can go on our region’s paths.

The Path Foundation is celebrating 30 years of service to the Metro Atlanta area. Since 1991, it has played a key role in developing multi-use, accessible paths throughout the metro area by surveying communities and land use and then advocating for paths and partially funding their acquisition and construction. Their process regularly involves repurposing existing unused spaces, like old railroads, to serve as locations for new paths.

As of 2021, the Path Foundation has helped to build more than 300 miles of paths around Metro Atlanta. Some of the paths, like the Beltline, are built in part by the Path Foundation and then turned over to local nonprofits to manage, and with dozens more paths on the horizon, Metro Atlanta’s already robust network is only getting better. In the next six months, the Path Foundation plans to complete nine new segments, including the Westside Beltline Segment 3 and the Newnan LINC phases A and B, adding 12.8 miles of trails by February 2022.

So, if you’re ready to hit the trails, no matter your age or ability, there is a path out there for you! Here are some to consider for your upcoming trips:

Quick and Easy Paths

Decatur Path

The short 1.5-mile Decatur Path is an easy jaunt through downtown Decatur. Enjoy some outside time, grab some lunch or a coffee, and enjoy a ride! It easily connects to the Stone Mountain trail, if you’re up for a challenge!

Trolley Trail

The Trolley Trail is perfect for a quick ride, totaling just over one mile. Situated between Kirkwood and Edgewood, it’s a great area to meet friends for a ride and a bite. In early 2022, the Path Foundation will begin construction on a trail connecting the Trolley Trail and the Beltline.

Proctor Creek Greenway

A somewhat hilly but short trail, Proctor Creek Greenway runs for 2.4 miles beginning at the Bankhead MARTA station. It gives you a great tour of one of Atlanta’s newest green spaces – Westside Park.

Family-Friendly Paths

Freedom Trail

Shady and scenic, the Freedom Trail (above) passes through a number of large green spaces – perfect for anything from a picnic to playing soccer. With Segment A measuring 1.4 miles in length and Segment B measuring 0.9 miles, either side would be a great place to get biking with the family.

Chastain Park Trail

Chastain Park Trail (left) is a 4.4-mile loop around Chastain Park. Easily stop by the nearby golf course or playground for a fun time for the whole family!

Paths to Challenge Yourself

Silver Comet

At 61.9 miles miles and extending all the way to the Alabama border, the Silver Comet Trail is the longest in the metro area. When combined with Alabama’s neighboring Chief Ladiga Trail (33 miles), it becomes the longest continuous, paved trail in the US. It’s a great choice for distance riders of all abilities!

Stone Mountain Trail

One of the hilliest trails, the Stone Mountain Trail rises to 1080 ft above sea level and travels 18.4 miles from Downtown Atlanta east to Stone Mountain. With tons to see along this trail, 18.4 miles just might go by faster than you think!

Paths for Atlanta Explorers

Arabia Mountain Path

Arabia Mountain Path (above) is 19.1 miles in length – one of the longer trail options in the area. Given its location, it is hilly compared to other trails, maxing out at 979 ft in elevation. The trail runs past a 19th century granite quarry which is believed to have provided granite to major national buildings, including Congressional buildings in Washington, DC.

Path 400 Greenway

Path 400 Greenway (right) runs for 4.9 miles along Georgia SR 400. This is a great path to explore areas like Buckhead and Lindbergh and to check off your shopping list all while getting some exercise on your bike.
