Whether heading to work or school or going for a joyride, taking your bike on transit can make your ride easier, more enjoyable and open up more of the region as potential places to bike. Georgia Commute Options is here to help you navigate the transit rules and share some tips and tricks to make your ride smooth and safe.

Wheels are welcome anytime aboard MARTA, CobbLinc, Ride Gwinnett, and Xpress transit systems. Here’s what you need to know:

  • On the train: Bikes are always welcome on MARTA trains. The best way to ride MARTA with your bike is to stand at the end of a train car or in the luggage area near the doors. Make sure your bike is not blocking the doors or aisle or taking space away from a passenger needing a seat. If the train cars are crowded, especially around rush hour, consider waiting for the next train. Use common sense and be courteous to those around you. You can carry your bike or take the elevator up and down the stairs. Remember, no riding your bike in the MARTA stations. You can store your bike for free – lock required – at all but one of MARTA’s 38 rail stations (airport station is the exception). Some stations even have bike repair kiosks to pump your tires or fix a flat.
  • On the bus: Every MARTA, Ride Gwinnett, and CobbLinc bus has a bike rack on the front of the bus that holds two bikes. Space is first come, first served. Most Xpress buses have a rack in front that holds one or two bicycles. If your bus doesn’t have a rack or it’s full, the operator will place it in the undercarriage bin. Before exiting the bus, remind the bus driver that you need to retrieve your bike. Ask your driver if you need assistance.

Taking your bike on transit is a great way to optimize your commute and enjoy the health and environmental benefits of cycling year-round in metro Atlanta.
